Abstract: background: the aim of the current research has been comparing the effectiveness of a brief psychotherapy with the usual treatment of common mental disorders in mental health centers (mhc) of asturias. the general background of this study has already been described by fernández-méndez et al (2010) and readers are referred to that article for details regarding rationale, design, treatments and procedures of the study. subjects and method: two hundred and sixteen patients over the age of 14 were selected at random among those who consulted for the first time in six mhc and were diagnosed of depressive, anxiety or adjustment disorders. one hundred and forty-one fulfilled the inclusion criteria and agreed to take part in the study; they were assigned at random into two groups: brief integrative-eclectic psychotherapy (n = 76) or usual treatment in the mhc (n = 65). their results have been compared at 6, 12, 24 and 36 months against diverse indexes of clinical improvement, psycho-social functioning and sanitary indirect indicators. information has been obtained from the psychiatric cases record, the clinical history and from the patients. the following instruments have been used: the clinical global impression of improvement scale, the sheehan disability inventory and a satisfaction survey. results: brief psychotherapy was more effective than usual treatment: it resulted in a higher number of discharges and subjects show greater improvements in clinical status and disability, and greater satisfaction. these differences occur both at 6 months to one year and two years of starting treatment. furthermore, although the average number of sessions is equal in both groups (about six), time-wise the psychological treatment lasted much less. conclusions: psychotherapy has proven a viable and effective treatment for most cases consulted at the mhc.

Abstract: The aim of this work is to evaluate the characteristics of activated and non-activated carbon obtained from carbon-enriched coal fly ashes (CECFA) from two different power stations to be used in the low temperature reduction of NO from stack gases. Carbon-rich fractions were obtained by mechanical sieving of fly ashes and by oil agglomeration. Activation of some samples was carried out in steam at 900oC in order to develop porosity onto the samples. The obtained activated and non-activated samples were characterised by several techniques and their nitric oxide removal capacity at a low temperature using ammonia as a reducing agent was evaluated (gas conditions: 150 oC, 1000 μL/L NO, 1200 μL/L NH3 , 60 mL/L O2, Ar as balance). CECFA obtained only by sieving had carbon content varying from 1 % to 47 %, and NO reduction levels varying from 3 % to 29%. CECFA L2A and E2A, obtained by sieving, agglomeration and further activation, contained 66 % and 57 % of carbon respectively, and their NO conversion was 36 % and 48%. BET surface areas of CECFA samples before activation were in all cases below 20 m2/g. In the case of activated samples, L2A and E2A the surface area increased to 217 and 395 m2/g respectively. In all cases, and comparing samples with the same carbon content, CECFA coming from Escucha demonstrated higher NO conversion capacity. The obtained results show that carbon content, surface area and parent coal type are the main parameters that influence the NO removal capacity of the obtained CECFA. Abstract: Over the past several years fungal infections have shown an increasing incidence in the susceptible population, and caused high mortality rates. In parallel, multi-resistant fungi are emerging in human infections. Therefore, the identification of new potential antifungal targets is a priority. The first task of this study was to analyse the protein domain and domain architecture content of the 137 fungal proteomes (corresponding to 111 species) available in UniProtKB (UniProt KnowledgeBase) by January 2013. The resulting list of core and exclusive domain and domain architectures is provided in this paper. It delineates the different levels of fungal taxonomic classification: phylum, subphylum, order, genus and species. The analysis highlighted Aspergillus as the most diverse genus in terms of exclusive domain content. In addition, we also investigated which domains could be considered promiscuous in the different organisms. As an application of this analysis, we explored three different ways to detect potential targets for antifungal drugs. First, we compared the domain and domain architecture content of the human and fungal proteomes, and identified those domains and domain architectures only present in fungi. Secondly, we looked for information regarding fungal pathways in public repositories, where proteins containing promiscuous domains could be involved. Three pathways were identified as a result: lovastatin biosynthesis, xylan degradation and biosynthesis of siroheme. Finally, we classified a subset of the studied fungi in five groups depending on their occurrence in clinical samples. We then looked for exclusive domains in the groups that were more relevant clinically and determined which of them had the potential to bind small molecules. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of the available fungal proteomes and shows three approaches that can be used as a first step in the detection of new antifungal targets.

Abstract: Abstract Despite the progress in the fetal echocardiographic detection of congenital critical heart defects and neonatal physical examination, a significant number of newborn infants are discharged and readmitted to the hospital in severe condition due to cardiac failure or collapse. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of undetected critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) by a pulse oximetry-screening program in the maternity wards of hospitals with Perinatal Services in a specific geographic area. This is a prospective observational study performed in in the health area corresponding to the city of Valencia. Eligible infants were consecutively admitted newborn infants in the maternities of the participating hospitals with negative fetal echocardiography after normal physical examination in the delivery room. All patients were screened following a specific pulse oximetry protocol before discharge. A total of 8856 newborn infants were screened. A total of three babies presented with severe congenital cardiac malformation and two babies presented with early onset sepsis. Sensitivity was 100% and specificity was 99.97%, with a positive predictive value of 60% and negative predictive value of 100%. Pulse oximetry screening programs in the early neonatal period constitute a valuable tool to avoid inadvertent hospital discharge of severe cardiac malformations and the subsequent life-threatening complications derived. Abstract: Angiogenesis is considered an important factor in the pathogenesis of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) where it has been proposed as a therapeutic target. In other settings, active angiogenesis is characterized by pathologic, immature vessels that lack periendothelial cells. We searched for the presence of immature vessels in RA synovium and analyzed the dynamics of synovial vasculature along the course of the disease, particularly after therapeutic response to TNF antagonists.

Abstract: NADPH oxidases constitute a major source of superoxide anion (?O2?) in hypertension. Several studies suggest an important role of NADPH oxidases in different effects mediated by TGF-β 1. In this study we show that chronic administration of P144, a peptide synthesized from type III TGF-β 1 receptor, significantly reduced the cardiac NADPH oxidase expression and activity as well as in the nitrotyrosine levels observed in control spontaneously hypertensive rats (V-SHR) to levels similar to control normotensive Wistar Kyoto rats. In addition, P144 was also able to reduce the significant increases in the expression of collagen type I protein and mRNA observed in hearts from V-SHR. In addition, positive correlations between collagen expression, NADPH oxidase activity, and nitrotyrosine levels were found in all animals. Finally, TGF-β 1-stimulated Rat-2 exhibited significant increases in NADPH oxidase activity that was inhibited in the presence of P144. It could be concluded that the blockade of TGF-β 1 with P144 inhibited cardiac NADPH oxidase in SHR, thus adding new data to elucidate the involvement of this enzyme in the profibrotic actions of TGF-β 1.
